More about Andrew

  • 29 years' experience
  • Male
  • LICSW, LMHC, LCSW

I have over twenty years of clinical experience working with client's experiencing intimate relationship difficulties, addiction, difficulty managing anger, coping with grief and loss, mental health challenges like Bipolar Disorder, Depression, and PTSD.. I also have almost eight years of working with veterans attempting to adjust to civilian life after separation from the military, young people finding healthy ways to make the transition to early adulthood.

My work with client's is driven by the belief that all of us have the capacity for making change. This change comes from the courage and willingness to examine our lives and begin to develop a plan to make things better. We are all worthy of seeking better things in our lives.

I approach my work with a positive attitude, encouraging communication, stressing personal responsibility, and never give up attitude. I believe life is for the living. It's up to each one of us to unlock our [potential and actively seek to obtain our goals, fill our bucket lists, have no regrets !

I am located in the USA and in the Eastern Standard Time Zone. I work here part time with a traditional Monday-to-Friday work week. I do find myself online at some point every day typically. I'm most frequently available from 5pm-800pm, very early many mornings by 4am for a couple of hours which makes working with international client's very manageable, and some weekend hours too. I hope that these times work.

Most client's enjoy a combination of message based communications that are not in real time with regular weekly live sessions bu video (not Skype) or cell. There is even a "live chat" function where we can write to each other on a split screen in real time. We can decide what works best for you.

I try extremely hard to get back to client's within the same day a message is received. There are times when I'm in daily contact, often in bunches of messages, with client's as needed. There are times that we may be in weekly contact. We can establish this rhythm of contact together.

A credo that I go by:

If you keep on doing what you've always done you will keep on being what you've always been. Nothing changes unless YOU make the change.

I try to bring the following quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. into my work as best I can:

"We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there "is" such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”

Another favorite thought of mine comes from a movie and states "Life is too short not to have a cookie when you want one"

Best,

Andy

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

This service is also good living in a rural area where anonymity would be difficult. I used to work in education and we learn best when we do, not when we are told. Reviewed January 2018

I’ve been counseling with Andy for four month now on several challenges in my life rooted mostly in my past. This was my first time experience ever with any type of mental health therapy. I had my initial reservations as this would typically be the last resort I’d chose to seek solutions for my problems. Andy has been instrumental in helping me through these challenges and was able to “crack the nut” in many unexplored and for me complex areas. He has guided me in how to get more in touch with my true self and inspired appetite to explore and share more of my less pleasant life experiences and feel ok about it. Which helps me significantly with getting along with my life challenges. Andy has most definitely managed to “squeeze the water out of a rock” in my case for which he has my deepest respect and admiration! If you look for somebody who’s very client centric, good listener, always positive and very inspirational, patient - no matter what you throw at him, flexible, responsive and very competent and experienced- GET ANDY! He’s got your back through thick and thin and he’ll truly go above and beyond to secure client's satisfaction! He’ll effectively coach you at your own pace towards where you eventually want to be. What I appreciate the most that Andy is not the "one size fits all" type. I find him very focused on client's specific needs and seeking together the best "fit for purpose" approach that client is most comfortable with to maximize and accelerate results. I don’t know what's the standard out there as I have nothing to compare it to. But I’ll say this: “I don’t feel the need to explore that as I found the perfect life counseling professional for me!” It feels like I won a bargain with Andy and would chose him as my therapist as well as recommend him to anybody and everybody every and any time. Thank you very much Andy! Look forward to continue to work together!

Andy is such a good fit for me. He has helped me with anxiety as well as with life and career choices. He has sort of become my "life coach," and I am so grateful for his listening ear, his ideas, his questions for me to ponder and consider, and just his overall support. Andy is a very gifted counselor, who is compassionate, caring and supportive in his advice. Andy cares about what I am feeling, and always has encouraging words for me. Andy did, and still is helping me work through several traumatic events in the past nine months. He truly listens to me, even when I have a hard time explaining what I'm feeling. Recently, I received a medical diagnosis of MS. Andy talked with me about it, and still does. He has given me other places to find help with this, which has helped me. He continues to help me with this, with his "never give up" attitude. After having bad experiences with in-person counselors, Andy is a refreshing change to all of that. Andy once told me in the beginning of our time together, "Always have Faith" and "Never lose Hope". Although this is hard for me to believe sometimes, Andy makes sure I don't forget it. Reviewed April 2016

I began counseling here for relationship and career struggles. Not long after starting, Andy identified and helped me to see that struggles I was having had more to do with my own self-worth difficulties than either specific problem. I was extremely pleased when he made this observation. I think I had only “conceded” needing counseling because I felt I was negatively impacting others in my life, but I had been unable to admit I really needed help with myself. I was both surprised and grateful when he made this observation, and it let me know early on that he was truly listening and working to provide real help, not just help with what I thought I needed, but to help identify what would really help change my life for the better. Throughout this process, he has helped me to re-frame my pervasive negative ways of thinking. Within a couple weeks, I felt much better, but worried my change could be short-term. After four months, I see that I have cycled through ups and downs, but because it has been longer now, I also see that Andy is really helping me to change habits for the long term. I am not ready to be done with counseling, not because I haven’t grown, but because I am continuing to grow and I don’t know what could be much more valuable of an investment that continuing to change myself and my life for the better. Through this process, I have gone through periods of extreme worry that much of my improvement has to do with having someone caring and understanding to help me, rather than actual improvement from within. Andy’s honest nature has helped me to be open about even these issues, and he has shown me how my improvements have much more to do with myself than I realize. As his profile states, he does encourage taking responsibility and choosing to make changes to one’s own life. I’ve spent so much time in the past being stagnant, and yet I’ve made so many changes and done so much in the last few months. I don’t know that I would have done many, if any, of these things without this support. In some ways, it’s easier to type than to say things face-to-face, but in other ways, there is a fear that you will miss the honest reaction. It is easy to think that the counselor could simply be filtering any negative response, because I cannot observe the initial facial expression in this text-based system. However, Andy is honest about negative things often enough that it is easy to trust him. I have no doubt that he will tell me something negative if it is indeed true, and so knowing this helps me to also trust the positive things he says. He is never judgmental, but often needs to help me re-frame any flawed perspectives. I have learned I can always say what I think, and even if it something I feel should be viewed negatively, he will give me helpful advice rather than anything that feels close to judgement. Andy always responds with specific advice. It is easy to tell he listens thoroughly. He is good at not only listening to what I say are my concerns, but also pulling things out of what I say that I didn’t even notice myself - surprising me with unexpected observations I perhaps need to address. I had little previous experience with counseling. I had been to one other face-to-face counselor for just a couple sessions. It may have been because it was early on, but I struggled to be open and then the time was cut short before I had said much of importance. My thoughts became disjointed not being able to talk again for a week. Here, I can write whenever I have something to say, and Andy responds frequently. In this way, I can write when I have thoughts instead of when the time is scheduled, and I know that he also has something to say as well, not just respond because he feels he has to within the given time constraints. This is a huge advantage of this platform. Finally, Andy has helped me to rely more on my faith, which has gone through periods of strength and periods of great doubt (such as when I began therapy) throughout my life. He has helped me to see that many of my life doubts are the sorts of doubts many people share. That sometimes we do need to rely on a greater trust. That looking towards what is good, towards what/who we want to be, and what we should do about it is very important. I very much love the fact that he promotes living in the moment, being authentic, and one of the most helpful things he has suggested - that doing the next right thing will get us where we want to be in life. Andy is a great counselor, and I hope this review can help others better understand how he and this service can help them.
