Hello! Thank you for taking the time to view my profile. I am Janet Wise-Thomas, a Licensed NYS Clinical Social Worker who has been working for over 30 years with individuals with chronic illnesses and who have suffered many forms of psychological and physical trauma. My work with young adults to seniors who struggled with variety of presenting issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship and family issues, community violence and gender identity. I am sensitive and respectful for multi/cross-cultural factors, and trained others on cultural competency. In the end, it is about building therapeutic relationship with you that is compassionate, warmth and in-tune with your needs.

My therapeutic approach draws from many disciplines, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness and Solution-Focused Therapy. I am a strong believer in collaborating with my clients to help them create and accomplish their goals. Whether it is dealing with symptoms of depression or anxiety, or getting back to normalcy after experiencing trauma and/or going through a life crisis. Over the years, I have been privileged to work with many individuals and families looking to increase their overall stability and find joy and purpose in their lives. I do not have a “one size fits all” approach. Each individual or family constellation has specific needs, and my coaching and counseling reflects the importance of tuning into their concerns. Let’s talk about how I can help you in your journey to a better and healthier you!

In addition, I have undergone intensive training in Pastoral Counseling through Fordham University’s School of Religion and Religious Studies. My training and experiences included offering grief and crisis counseling in hospital settings such as the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit. In the community, I provided pastoral care counseling to members at The Riverside Church in the City of New York. In these unprecedented times of disproportionate loss and grief, I have the skill set of empathy and compassion to help you as you grieve the loss of love ones, especially when you were not able to say goodbye.

I believe that you work with a person in mind, body and spirit. Outside of my work as a therapist, I am a licensed fitness instructor who teaches yoga, Enerchi (a form of Tai Chi) and cardio-fitness (including Cardio Drumming) to persons of all ages.

You are unique and you were created to do good things in this world for yourself and others. You are taking the steps to develop your potential! I welcome the opportunity to work with you and it is an honor to be your guide through your healing process.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

Janet was so instrumental in helping me this last 6 months. Without her help I don’t think I would have been able to move from a survivor to a thriver and definitely not in the time frame that I have. Janet helped me to see the truth about myself and showed me a path forward that I had never thought possible. I will forever be grateful and recommend her as well as better help to anyone struggling through the same issues I have.

I feel like I’ve discovered so much more about myself through Janet. I wouldn’t have been able to establish my personal boundaries without her expertise.

Janet has been beyond helpful in my journey to wellness and healing. I am forever grateful to her for her insight, wisdom and for all that she has helped to guide me through in a season of confusion, discomfort and brokenness. I would highly recommend her as a therapist and although I have been able to reach my therapy goals with her, should I need to come back to therapy- this is the woman I’ll be seeing.

Thank you very much to Janet. I'm grateful that she was my therapist during a challenging time. I appreciated her compassion and insight into some of the issues I was dealing with when we first met. Over many sessions, she sent me helpful workbooks and thought provoking webinar series, that we would discuss the following week. I recommend Janet to anyone who is looking for an experienced, and insightful therapist.

I came to Janet first after losing a loved one and struggling with grief. I have worked with her for almost a year though, because that grief involved many other elements of struggle and she helped me work through them. I came to Janet in desperate need of coping mechanisms and she taught me all of those and more! Additionally, she did so with grace, thoughtfulness, and profound kindness. I don't even know how to sufficiently express my gratitude for her. This year has been challenging but working with Janet allowed me to grow in a way that would not have been possible without her.

Janet is very comforting and warm. She listens well and provides great feedback to utilize in your every day life. We have only just begun my sessions however, I am hopeful and excited for the future.

I was only able to attend sessions for about 2 months, but in that time Janet was a great help to me. She helped me recognize aspects of my behavior I had been ignoring and showed me how I could do better by focusing on myself. She left me in a much better position to care for myself, and by extension the people I care about. Thank you!

I’ve had a few months worth of sessions with Janet and I can already see progress in my mood and in the reduction of negative thoughts and general anxiety. Janet listens well and is so encouraging! She has all the tools and strategies you can imagine to combat mental health issues and she tailors them to your specific needs. She helped me with mindfulness, breathing, and finding compassion for MYSELF!

Janet Wise is very Wise! I love Janet and really appreciated working with her. She really provided strong structure, was an excellent listener, and gave me quality time. I could tell that she was prioritizing me and making sure I had what I needed - she would check in with me mid-week and respond to the written things I sent her in a timely manner. She was respectful and always compassionate with my questions and situations. Thanks to Janet I was able to find my internal compass again and now have a toolbox of strategies and things I can turn to; I really feel like I have the skills and knowledge to take better care of my mental health now. I thought I was self aware before I met Janet, and she helped me understand a whole new level of how to consider things and approach my challenges. Highly recommend Janet for anyone who wants the "reality therapy" grounded in practical actions and techniques, and a wonderful, humorous guide. :)
