More about Scott

  • 23 years' experience
  • Male
  • LCSW

I'm an older, more conservative therapist. My first experience in the field was with the Army as a Behavioral Science Specialist in 1984. I have worked in Community Mental Health, Psychiatric Hospitals, private practice, and most recently service mostly active duty Air Force at Nellis and Creech Air Force base. I'm well trained and experienced working with trauma, depression, and anxiety. I can help with problem solving, anger management, and other issues. I am experienced treating people with very serious conditions, and, highly functional people that have hit a rough spot. Counseling does not have to be heavy, serious and intimidating. Under the right circumstances, we can both find humor in a situation and release tension with laughter instead of tears.

For the new client, you may have a better experience and have your expectations met if you have an idea what you want out of therapy. With my experience on this site, I have some observations. Some of you very much enjoy the convenience of this platform. And, however you choose to receive counseling, teleconference, phone, or chat, that is what you will get. There are some that enjoy the almost complete anonymity of the internet platform. There are some that are interested in an assessment, diagnosis, and consultation or treatment recommendations based on the diagnosis. There are some that very much want a good listener. If you let me know what you want, I'll lock in. If you change your mind about what you want, I'll be flexible. If you want short-term counseling, let me know the number of sessions, and we'll get as much done as we can. If therapy is going to be a part of your long-term growth, let me know that as well. Of course, there is the possibility that you just want to sample therapy to see what it's all about. I think that's great!

I sometimes wish my dad listens and advises me things the way Scott does. He’s a very good listener and would challenge me in ways I would realize the answers I’ve been looking for. I’m far from being comfortable at being myself and getting my anxiety managed but Scott’s been my longest therapist to date and that says more about his methods than my patience at therapies. Highly recommend.

From the bottom of my heart, I truly believe Scott Underwood is an expert with the patience and time it takes one to unload trauma - of all kinds. Quite frankly, as an individual that also works in the psychiatric field, Scott is genuinely the best listener, the most comforting support system, and WILL help you heal. It is possible and he will help you see this. I have seen that he is capable of changing my perspective, which ultimately is changing my life. This being said, my issues surround PTSD, ANXIETY, and RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS. Furthermore, I tried to work with seven other individuals on Better Help, but Scott is BY FAR the only practitioner I’ve considered to be capable of combating the brutality of personal trauma’s - in the most heartfelt and sensitive manner. He is also the only individual I would recommend to those who have complex trauma. If I were to rate him 1-10, Scott is 1,000,000. Thank you Scott!

I really enjoy my sessions with Scott because he truly cares and after every session I would always walk away with something to think about and take action on. He really listens to my concern and tries to understand where I was coming from. But not only that, he helps me dissect everything that has been piling up in my mind, untangle every knot that has been straining me. I love the techniques and protocols Scott provided. They help me reframe my mind, better handle the day-to-day challenge and my own emotions. I am feeling more and more confident to do the work to become a better version of myself. Highly recommend!

I have been working with Scott for the past 3 months. Scott is a great listener. I feel truly heard. He is very direct when needed, but also validates my feelings and concerns. He sometimes shares relatable experiences, which I find very comforting as he offers alot of wisdom and insight from them. Scott gave me tools that I can use day to day and made his advice and outlook very easy to understand and digest. He often asked me thought provoking questions, that made me think of things in a way I hadn't before (usually light bulb moments!) which has been a very effective way of helping me to understand how I really feel about scenarios without over complicating them in my head. Scott also used humour at the right moments, which helps to make things feel more lighthearted. Thank you Scott for all your support and time. I wish you all the best - happiness and health in life.

Through working with Scott, I have grown my ability to recognize my own resilience and adaptability (even when it feels terrifying and I don't know how in the world I'm going to do it). I found Scott's casual demeanor and dry humour grounding, especially being someone who tends to treat everything as the most important and is sensitive to the expectations of others. Other reviews mentioned giving "reality checks", and I would agree with them. Thanks to my sessions with Scott, I have new tools available to me to think through difficult situations, where I would have previously been overwhelmed. Thank you Scott!!

I've been working with Scott for 4 sessions and every session I walk away with a valuable nugget I can apply to my own life. I learned how to embrace aspects of my personality that I thought I needed to repress. This self acceptance led me to better balance in my life. I also became more courageous in pursuing my goals since I can ask myself questions to mitigate worst case scenarios that emerge from my anxious thoughts. Scott combines warmness in his approach with professionalism and decades of experience (such as working with the Army). I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a therapist.
