More about Joanne

  • 7 years' experience
  • Female
  • BACP

I am a registered member with BACP ( British Association for Counselling and psychotherapy) based in the east midlands UK. I have wide experience providing mental health support and interventions with children young people and adults both on and offline.

I have a deep sense of social justice which drives me to questions, challenge and seek to change many of the structures which become barriers to groups and individuals accessing the help and support they need at times when they most need it.

I trained a person-centred counsellor and have a great belief in Carl Rodgers approach that given the right conditions a person will achieve self-actualisation. That the counsellor’s role is to provide unconditional positive regard (UPR), to accept and value the person, being congruent and at times having empathic understanding, helping clients explore their own beliefs and understanding. I have been delivering counselling remotely and in person with clients 6+ - 60+ years.

At all times I have provided a wide range of creative, therapeutic interventions for either group or individual people to explore their issues and concerns including trauma, sexual violence, abuse, neglect, bullying, low self-esteem, self-harm, gender identity, sexuality, family difficulties, mother daughter work, parent child family break downs to name but a few. I have provided interventions to support people through often very painful journeys, until they find empowered to take back control over their own life choices and chances.

Building positive boundaried therapeutic relationships where people feel they are held in a safe space, where they have a voice in the support and services delivered for them is extremely important to me and underpins all of my therapeutic work.

I strongly believe that when a person reaches out to a service, they should be welcomed, people should be engaged in meaningful ways, asked about how they feel and be reallly listened to, that they are active participants in their own care. People should never feel things are being done to them and their voice has not been heard, leading to a less stressful and more meaningful experience.

I will create a safe supportive space where you can explore what is going for you, whilst developing a range of coping strategies to help you move forward in a positive way

I believe that you are the expert of your story and that you have many strengths that will assist you in overcoming things that challenge you. Taking the first step to seeking a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage. I am here to support you in that process.

It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Starting at $65 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.
